Most Students Start Preparing for Placements Too Late. Here's the Ugly Truth.
The average IIT student thinks placement prep starts in 3rd year. The ones who actually land the dream offers? They started building the foundation in 2nd year — quietly, consistently, without posting about it on LinkedIn.
This isn't a motivational post. This is the timeline nobody gave you at orientation.
2nd Year (Semester 3 & 4): Build the Base, Not the Resume
This is the most underutilized phase. You have time, low academic pressure comparatively, and zero interview anxiety yet. Use it.
Semester 3 (July – November)
- Pick your lane early: Software (SDE/quant/data) or Core? You don't have to commit forever, but directionless prep wastes months.
- Start DSA — for real: Not YouTube binge-watching. Start Leetcode Easy problems. Aim for 3–4 problems a week, consistently.
- Learn one language deeply: C++ or Python. Know it well enough to explain your code out loud.
- Explore one domain: Web dev, ML, systems — just enough to know what excites you.
Semester 4 (January – May)
- Move to Leetcode Medium: Arrays, strings, hashmaps, recursion. These cover 60% of OA rounds.
- Build one real project: Not a tutorial clone. Something you can explain the architecture of.
- Apply for research/internships: Even unpaid or professor-level ones. Resume whitespace at 3rd year is expensive.
3rd Year (Semester 5 & 6): The Real Game Begins
This is where most students panic and start. You're already ahead if you followed the 2nd year plan. Now it's about sharpening, not starting.
Semester 5 (July – November)
- DSA — go deeper: Graphs, dynamic programming, trees, sliding window. Minimum 150 Leetcode problems before semester ends.
- Crack the internship season (Dec–Feb): Your PPO shot. Treat intern interviews like final placements.
- Resume version 1: One page, no filler. Get it reviewed by seniors who've actually been placed, not just anyone with a LinkedIn.
- Core aspirants: Start GATE/domain prep parallelly. Thermodynamics doesn't revise itself in 3 weeks.
Late-night prep sessions are real during this phase. A warm, distraction-free setup matters more than people admit — the kind where you're locked in with a KS Verse heavy-duty hoodie or your Batch Nexus merch and nothing else on your mind except the next problem. Small things, big focus.
Semester 6 (January – May)
- Intern → PPO conversion: This is your highest-leverage bet. Treat it like a 6-month interview.
- If no intern yet: Double down on projects and competitive programming. Don't spiral — redirect.
- Start system design basics: For SDE roles, even surface-level knowledge of scalability, databases, and APIs sets you apart in 4th year.
4th Year (Semester 7): Execute, Don't Explore
Placement season hits in July–October for most IITs. By now, exploring should be over. This is pure execution mode.
- 200+ Leetcode problems: Non-negotiable for top product companies.
- Mock interviews: At least 10 before Day 1. Technical + HR both.
- Know your resume cold: Every line is a potential interview question.
- Mental health check: Rejections happen to everyone. Your peer getting placed first is not your failure.
The One Thing Everyone Gets Wrong
Consistency over intensity. Two hours every day beats a 10-hour weekend grind every single time. The students who burn out in October are the ones who did nothing until August.
Start now. Stay boring about it. Show up tomorrow.
