Nobody tells you that your carefully packed 32-inch suitcase will sit unopened for three weeks while you live out of a backpack and someone else's charger. - Two sets of bedsheets and pillow covers (thin cotton for summer, one warm set for winters)
- A lightweight blanket and one proper quilt — hostel ACs and fans are both extreme
- Compact study lamp with USB charging port built in
- A small whiteboard or sticky notes for your door — you'll thank us during exam season
Clothing: Pack Half of What You Think You Need
This is where most freshers get it catastrophically wrong. You do not need 15 shirts for a place where the unofficial dress code is "whatever is clean." Pack for a two-week rotation, maximum.
Everyday Wear
- 6–8 oversized tees or comfortable cotton T-shirts — these pull double duty for class, labs, and late-night chai runs
- 3–4 pairs of comfortable joggers or cargo pants
- One pair of clean formal trousers and a shirt (for orientation day and the one time your HOD spots you)
- Good quality underwear and socks — at least 10 pairs each. This is not the place to economize.
- Flip-flops for the bathroom, one pair of decent sneakers, and one pair of sports shoes
The One Clothing Investment That Actually Matters
Winters on campus hit different — especially in campuses like IIT Roorkee, IIT Kanpur, or NIT Kurukshetra where the cold is not a vibe, it's a threat. A heavyweight hoodie is not optional in North India.
The hoodies you'll actually see on campus — the ones that survive three years of washing, overnight lab sessions, and being used as a pillow — are built differently. Hostel mess food is... an experience. Here's what keeps you alive between meals.
- An electric kettle — 1000 watts minimum. This makes Maggi, coffee, oats, and technically soup.
- Two steel mugs, a small plate, and a spoon (steel — plastic breaks, glass is a liability)
- A stock of instant noodles, oats, protein bars, and peanut butter
- A reusable water bottle — at least 1 litre, insulated if possible
Tech & Study Setup
- Laptop (already mentioned — just emphasizing it again)
- Portable hard drive or at least a 128GB pen drive for storing notes and assignments
- A good pair of wired earphones as backup — Bluetooth dies at 2 AM before your submission deadline
- Portable power bank — 20,000 mAh minimum
- Extension board with surge protection — this will save both your devices and your hostel-mates' goodwill
- Blue light glasses if you're going to be on screens 10+ hours a day (you will be)
What to Absolutely Leave Behind
Half the battle of packing smart is knowing what not to bring. Be ruthless.
- More than 2–3 books from coaching — your institute library has everything, and you'll buy what you need
- A desktop PC (seriously, not worth it in year one)
- Your entire wardrobe — you'll be in a hostel uniform of tees and tracks 80% of the time
- Expensive jewelry or anything you'd be heartbroken to lose
- A full cooking setup — your kettle is enough until you know your hostel's rules
