The Complete IIT First Year Survival Guide (Everything They Don't Tell You at Orientation)

Orientation Lied to You. Here's the Real Briefing.

They showed you the labs, the clubs, the smiling seniors. They talked about "holistic development" and "world-class faculty." What they didn't tell you is that the first semester of IIT will quietly destroy you — and then rebuild you — in ways nobody warns you about.

This is the guide that should exist. Written by people who've been through it.

The CPI Trap Nobody Mentions

Your JEE rank got you here. Your CPI will not define what you become. But the first semester will make you forget that completely.

  • Relative grading is brutal. A 7.5 at IIT is not the same as a 9.5 at your coaching centre. The curve is unforgiving.
  • Semester 1 is not a predictor. Half the people who graduate with dream placements had a rocky S1. The other half coasted and then crashed in Sem 3.
  • Don't optimise only for grades. The students who build something — a project, a club, a network — always outrun the grade-grinders by Year 3.

Track your CPI. Don't worship it.

Hostel Life Will Test You More Than Any Exam

You've never shared a room with a stranger who sleeps at 5 AM and plays music at 2 AM. Now you do. And you have a 8:30 AM maths tutorial.

  • Set boundaries early. Politely, but clearly.
  • The mess food will be awful for the first three weeks. Then you'll stop noticing. Then you'll miss it after graduation.
  • Your wing becomes your tribe. Invest in those relationships — late-night maggi runs matter more than they sound.

The Social Hierarchy Is Temporary

In Week 1, everyone is performing confidence. The guy who seems like he has it all figured out? He's equally lost. Give it 60 days and the real personalities emerge.

Join clubs. Go to fests. Attend that random lecture about something you know nothing about. The compounding effect of curious exposure is insane over four years.

Things That Actually Matter in Year 1

  • Sleep. Non-negotiable. Sleep-deprived problem solving is just expensive guessing.
  • One skill outside your branch. Design, writing, coding, finance — pick one and go deep.
  • Show up to class. Controversial opinion: proxy culture will cost you during endsems when you realise you have no idea what happened in Weeks 6–9.
  • Talk to your seniors. Not just for notes. For context. Ask them what they'd do differently.

Your Uniform for the Chaos

Between 8 AM lectures, 11 PM lab submissions, and surprise cold snaps on the campus, you need gear that keeps up. A KS Verse heavy-duty hoodie from the Batch Nexus collection has become the unofficial campus armour for exactly this reason — built for long hours, cold hostels, and the kind of days where you don't leave the building until dark.

The One Thing Seniors Universally Regret

Not failing. Not a low CPI. Not a bad internship.

Playing it safe.

Every senior who has sat across from a junior and been honest says the same thing: "I wish I had tried that thing I was scared to try in first year." The startup idea. The research application. The club position. The conversation with that professor.

First year is the lowest-stakes time you'll ever have at IIT. Use the chaos as cover. Experiment aggressively.

Final Reality Check

IIT is not a destination. It's infrastructure. What you build on top of it is entirely your problem — and entirely your opportunity.

Orientation gave you the map. This is the terrain.

Welcome to the real first lecture.
