The Unwritten Rules of Every IIT Campus — Read Before You Arrive

Nobody Warns You About This Stuff

You cracked JEE. You survived the prep. You think the hard part is over.

It isn't.

The real learning curve at IIT has nothing to do with thermodynamics or algorithms. It's the social and cultural operating system of the campus — the stuff seniors know and freshers figure out the hard way. Here it is, unfiltered.

Rule #1: Your JEE Rank Means Nothing Here

Seriously. Drop it.

Everyone around you cleared JEE. The kid who got a higher rank than you might be struggling in Maths-1. The one who scraped through might be building a startup by Diwali. Campus reputation is built on what you do — not the number you arrived with.

The fastest way to make enemies in week one? Mentioning your rank unprompted.

Rule #2: The First Month Defines Your Social Circle for Four Years

This sounds dramatic. It's not.

Hostel corridors, mess tables, orientation groups — these become your default tribe. Be intentional about who you spend time with early on. That doesn't mean be calculating. It means show up, talk to people, don't hide in your room doom-scrolling.

  • Go to the first club intro sessions even if you're unsure
  • Eat in the mess, not delivery apps, for the first few weeks
  • Leave your room door open — it's a universal signal that you're approachable

Rule #3: Seniors Are an Asset, Not a Threat

The ragging horror stories? Mostly outdated. Most seniors are genuinely willing to help — PYQs, professor insights, internship referrals, which courses to avoid.

But you have to ask. They won't chase you down to mentor you.

One conversation with the right third-year can save you an entire semester of trial and error. Respect their time, be direct, and don't show up only when you need something.

Rule #4: Night Culture Is Real — Protect Your Sleep Anyway

IIT nights have a reputation. Wing-mates coding at 2am, corridor cricket at midnight, chai runs at 3am before an exam. It's part of the experience.

But chronic sleep deprivation is also why a lot of bright people tank their GPA in semester one. Find your balance early. The culture will always pull you toward staying up late — you need to consciously push back sometimes.

And yes, a good KS Verse heavy-duty hoodie will become your most-worn piece of clothing for exactly these late-night sessions — whether it's a 3am machine learning assignment or standing in the queue at the campus canteen at midnight.

Rule #5: The Grading Curve Is Brutal and Relative

You are not being graded against an absolute score. You're being graded against your batchmates — who are all exceptional.

  • A 60% in an IIT exam can be an 8-pointer. A 90% can be a 7.
  • Study groups beat solo grinding for most courses
  • Attendance policies are not suggestions at every institute — check before you bunk

Rule #6: Depression and Burnout Are More Common Than Anyone Admits

The campus will look energetic and competitive on the surface. Underneath, a lot of people are struggling — with identity, expectations, pressure, loneliness.

If you're going through it, you're not weak and you're not alone. Every campus has a student wellness cell. Use it. Talk to someone. The strongest students here are the ones who figured out how to ask for help.

One Last Thing

IIT isn't just a degree factory. It's four years of the most concentrated peer learning, opportunity, and chaos you'll ever experience. The students who get the most out of it aren't necessarily the smartest — they're the most present.

Show up. Stay curious. Don't be a ghost.

You've earned your spot here. Now go build something worth talking about.
