Your Mom Thinks You Need Everything. She's Wrong.
Every year, thousands of first-years show up to campus dragging three overstuffed suitcases, a pressure cooker, and a wall clock from 2009. Two weeks later, half of it is shoved under the bed collecting dust. Don't be that person.
You're moving into a hostel room roughly the size of a large bathroom. Space is currency. Here's what actually matters.
The Non-Negotiables (Actually Pack These)
📋 Documents First — Always
- Originals + multiple photocopies of your JEE scorecard, class 10 & 12 marksheets, and certificates
- Passport-size photos (carry 20+, you'll use them all)
- Aadhaar, PAN, bank passbook, and college admission letter
- A dedicated document folder. Waterproof. Don't compromise here.
🛏️ Hostel Survival Basics
- 2 sets of bedsheets + a light blanket (check if your campus provides mattresses beforehand)
- A good quality pillow — one bad pillow ruins 4 years of sleep
- Flip-flops exclusively for the bathroom. No exceptions. Ever.
- Power strip with surge protection (your room has 2 sockets, your devices are 6)
- Padlock for your cupboard and room door
💻 Tech That Actually Gets Used
- Laptop — mid-range is fine, don't blow your budget on specs you won't use in sem 1
- Wired earphones as backup (Bluetooth dies during an exam, trust the process)
- A portable charger / power bank — load-shedding and long lab days are real
- Hard drive or pen drive for assignment season chaos
🧴 Toiletries — Keep It Minimal
- One week's supply to start. Everything else is available near campus.
- A hanging toiletry bag — hostel bathroom shelves don't exist
- Microfiber towels (2 — they dry fast and take zero space)
🧥 Clothing — Real Talk
You will live in t-shirts, shorts, and one decent outfit for submissions and fests. That's it.
- 5–7 t-shirts, 3 shorts, 2 jeans, 1 formal shirt
- One solid hoodie for those 2 AM lab sessions, cold lecture halls, and literally every mood in between — the KS Verse heavy-duty hoodie was basically designed for this life. Warm, doesn't pill after 10 washes, and looks good whether you're in a seminar or a midnight maggi run.
- One pair of decent shoes + daily slippers
- Rain jacket or compact umbrella if your campus gets real monsoons (looking at you, NIT Trichy, BITS Goa)
Leave This At Home (Seriously)
- Your entire book collection — PDFs exist. Your back will thank you.
- A desktop PC — unless you've confirmed your room setup. Most don't have space.
- Decorative stuff — fairy lights, photo frames, posters. You'll buy what you actually want once you see the room.
- Excess cookware — induction cooktops are often banned. Check rules first.
- 15 pairs of shoes — hostel cupboards are not walk-in closets.
The Things Nobody Tells You to Pack
- A basic first-aid kit — paracetamol, ORS, band-aids. The campus health centre queue is long.
- Duct tape and zip ties — will fix more things than you expect
- A small whiteboard or sticky notes — better than trying to remember deadlines at 11 PM
- Cash (₹3,000–5,000 backup) — UPI fails during orientation week when 5,000 people are on the same network
The Real Packing Rule
If you can buy it within 2 km of campus, don't pack it. If losing it would genuinely hurt you — documents, laptop, one good hoodie, your mental peace — pack it carefully.
Everything else is just weight you'll carry, unpack, and eventually courier back home after mid-sems.
Pack smart. Walk in light. First year hits fast enough already.
